LEADERSHIP

Vitumbiko recalls that leadership roles started while he was still in Sunday school. He was always chosen to be the class leader and custodian of Sunday offerings.

While at Robert Laws Secondary School, Vitumbiko held some leadership positions in a Christian organisation called Students Christian Organisation of Malawi (SCOM) as a drama master when he was in Form 2 and then Chairman when in Form 3. He was also a house prefect for Frazer Hostel which was the biggest dormitory.

When he went to Phwezi, he was co-opted into the leadership of SCOM despite that the leadership was already chosen. He was also chosen by the head teachers to join the three head boys to meet and negotiate with then director of the school, Chipimpha Mughogho on the impending strike by students. It was during this meeting that his Pan-Africanism agenda was strengthened. He also used to be a chairman of the Debate Club and most of the topics were political. This encouraged him to explore more on Pan-Africanism.

At Polytechnic, Vitumbiko was the Acting Chairman for BD-SCOM in 2002, then Travelling/Evangelism Coordinator for BD-SCOM before becoming the Vice Chairman. He then became the President of the Polytechnic Students Union (PSU) and member of various boards and councils within the university as an ex-officio member.

It was also at Polytechnic that Vitumbiko tested political leadership as he was the College’s Chairman for Peoples Transformation Party whose president is Kamuzu Chibambo. He joined purely because its leader was known as a staunch Christian. This is because of his belief that there will be no true political and economic emancipation in Malawi without establishing Christian morals and values. He continued to be its member after college but later ceased to be a member due to some personal reasons.

While at Broadhurst Assemblies of God Church in Botswana, he was the Board Secretary for the church.

Currently, Vitumbiko is the Regional Chairman (North) for SCOM and Secretary for SoL Holdings Limited which is owned by Livingstonia, C.C.A.P

PAN-AFRICANISM

Vitumbiko is a member of Kwame Nkrumah Ideological Institute – KNII (https://nkrumaists.com) and United Pan-Africanist Movement (UPAM). He believes in one united African vision. He believes in the ideas of Thomas Sankara, Kwame Nkrumah, Thabo Mbeki, Patrice Lumumba, Julius Nyerere and Kweygir Aggrey.

While in Form 4 at Phwezi Boys Secondary School, Vitumbiko met Malani Nyirenda who was much ahead of Vitumbiko in terms of the understanding of Pan-Africanism. He was a great influence and prompted Vitumbiko to read more in order to understand Africa and its great sons and daughters. Fally Nsombo Nkhwazi and Goodrich Mughogho are other acquaintances at Phwezi that shared Pan-African ideas with Vitumbiko.

While in first year in college, Vitumbiko started reading biographies of various African Statesmen like Nelson Mandela, Robert Mugabe, Kwame Nkrumah, Julius Nyerere, Jomo Kenyatta, Haile Selassie. Patrice Lumumba etc. He read some materials on a number of influential Pan-Africans like Kweygir Aggrey of Ghana, Malcom X, Marcus Garvey and W.E.B. Dubois. This was made possible by one of his friends, Zizwani Khonje who used to have connections to where he could get books. He also used to discuss Pan-Africanism with friends especially his friend and confidant, Washington Chimuzu.

Locally, the articles by DD Phiri, in his DD Phiri Columns, have had much impact in terms of understanding Malawi’s history and current economic and political challenges.

As a Pan-African, Vitumbiko believes that for Malawi and Africa in general to prosper, there is need of the following:

  • Self-reliance and self-determination whereby Malawians no longer look up to external forces 100% to help them in their challenges.
  • External influence on Malawi’s economy will not help Malawians that much but self-diagnosis and prescription
  • There must be unity of purpose across the country regardless of tribes
  • Political leadership in Africa is not a source of employment but rather a way through which one can give back to his country through servant leadership
  • Political and economic emancipation in Malawi is highly dependent on levels of integrity, ethics, morals and Christian values

EVANGELISM

As a young child, his father was his inspiration. He taught him and his siblings the word of God every evening. This started increasing his desire for God. At church, he made sure he attended the sermons by his dad. During one of these sermons his dad preached of Prophet Elijah. He went back home and read the whole story of Elijah and Elisha. This experience gave birth to his desire to become a servant of the Lord.

While pursuing his Secondary School education, Vitumbiko started to share the word of God in various fora especially SCOM. This continued when he went to college. He used to minister to secondary school students through SCOM and hospitals through Commando-Total Invasion Ministry. It was the approach to evangelism used by Total Invasion Ministry that challenged him to model his evangelism calling around Commando-TIM.

In 2017, Vitumbiko registered his Evangelism Ministry called Plundering Hell Populating Heaven Evangelism aimed at evangelising the gospel to rural areas of Malawi.

His passion is to see all rural areas in Malawi reached out to with the gospel of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

ASSOCIATED MINISTRIES

Student Christian Organisation of Malawi (SCOM) which has had an impact on him from Secondary School days until now. The current Training Secretary for the north, Sam Mayuni and the Chaplain for Khondowe, Austin Chirwa, have been Vitumbiko’s personal friends and have given him the necessary support that he needed to grow spiritually for a very long time and continue to do so. They have given him necessary tools and platforms to horn his evangelical calling. Tufwane Mwagomba, the then BD SCOM Chairman did not only identify Vitumbiko’s potential but harnessed it, nurtured it through one to one teachings and discussions. He has stood by Vitumbiko from college days to date. He has become one of Vitumbiko’s pillars not only in spiritual matters but also in general matters of life.

Total Invasion Ministry which impacted him during his days at college and shaped his evangelism idea. He was introduced to this ministry by Richard Sabawo. Later after college through the same ministry he met Ammiel Champiti who has helped Vitumbiko in shaping up his ministry leadership skills. Ammiel has persuaded Vitumbiko to pursue studies in evangelism and discipleship (offered by T-Net) which will impart necessary church leadership skills in Vitumbiko.

Faith Ministries International whose founder, Apostle Burton Chavula has been very helpful to Vitumbiko since 2013 when they first met. God used him to horn Vitumbiko as a servant of God. He remains an inspiration and source of encouragement. His love for Vitumbiko and guidance has been very overwhelming. He has been a mentor to Vitumbiko since 2013. Through Apostle Burton, Vitumbiko’s understanding of spiritual warfare and spiritual matters was taken to another dimension and is still being taken to a greater level. Vitumbiko believes God used Apostle Chavula to open his spiritual eyes and understand the Bible in a very different yet spiritually enriching manner.
